International Dyslexia Association, defines as “Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that is neurobiological in origin.  It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.  These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.

Dyslexia results in difficult with

  • Difficulty in reading
  • Problems in writing
  • Poor spelling

What Dyslexia is associated with:

  • Difficulties in concentration
  • short term memory processing

What Dyslexia is not

  • the result of stupidity, laziness, dump
  • is not a curse
  • Not an illness like malaria, typhoid, hence cannot be addressed by medication
  • It is not rare, 10 -15% of population have dyslexia.
  • It is not an intellectual problem. There is absolutely no relation between dyslexia and IQ. Dyslexics can have high, middle, or low IQ’s just like the rest of the population
  • It is not due to mental retardation, brain damage, or a lack of intelligence

What does not cause Dyslexia

  • poor schooling
  • poor home background
  • poor motivation for learning
  • does not clinically manifest poor sight, hearing or muscle control – although it may occur with these conditions.
