Rare gem Talent School

200 Children with Neurodiversity are currently learning at Rare Gem Talent School, a remarkable growth from just 7 students at its inception in 2012. In addition, 35 graduates have completed high school and entered various careers, while 125 others successfully reintegrated into mainstream schools after a year or two of focused remedial support. These students regained their reading skills and are now thriving in regular school settings.

Building Capacity for Educators

Over 4,500 educators have participated in our Capacity Building workshops on Dyslexia and Invisible Learning Difficulties, enhancing their ability to support students with learning challenges. Each year, we aim to train 321 teachers, impacting over 4,000 children through this ripple effect. Our recent partnership with Mount Kenya University is set to further scale up this initiative. Teachers who complete the training will receive certification, opening opportunities for career advancement.

Screening and Assessment

3,500 children have been assessed at our centre for neurodivergent conditions. Based on these assessments, we guide parents on the most appropriate schools for their children. Many of these children have been integrated into Rare Gem Talent School, where they receive tailored support.

Research and Awareness of Learning Differences

A collaborative study with Africa Advantage Organisation revealed a critical gap: most teachers lack training and awareness in understanding dyslexia. This underscores the importance of our continued efforts in teacher education.

Community Awareness

Over 20 community awareness events in churches, empowering parents to understand and support their children’s unique learning needs. As a result, many children have been identified, assessed, and are now receiving the help they need. This has led to a significant shift in community perceptions about learning difficulties, creating a powerful ripple effect.

Magic Phonics Blending Book

DOK designed a teaching tool that aims to make reading accessible and enjoyable for children with dyslexia or other reading difficulties by focusing on blending as a critical early literacy skill.
