Construction of specialised dyslexia school in Kenya underway

The construction of a new school for kids with dyslexia in Kenya is fast coming together, thanks to the help from an Ayrshire sculptor.

Mark Stoddart, from Turnberry, has invested in the building of a specialised dyslexia school, helping to change the life of 216 students at Rare Gem Talent School in Nairobi.

The 58-year-old artist- whose distinct and exotic work has been snapped up by celebrities including Elton John and even Saudi Arabian royalty – has been supporting the Kenya Dyslexia Organisation to realise their dreams in building a new education centre to replace the tin rented building they are currently in.

Mark, who is dyslexic and a proud supporter of Dyslexia Scotland, credits his artistic success to the confidence he gained after attending Frewen College in Sussex, a school that specially catered for people with dyslexia.

And he hopes the new Rare Gem Talent School – which also boasts land for students to grow their own food – can do the same for pupils, providing them with the tools and equipment they need to not let neurodiversity issues hold them back from learning.
